So, as you have probably read here or elsewhere, I’m on Substack, talking about my passion for voices, sonic biases, the ways trauma can surface in our voice, etc.
This is an area of research I have been pursuing for years now, through my work with Atem Tonus Ton (ATT), in creating the Voce Libera Tutti training path with the amazing Eleonora Aleotti, my own studying of prosody to become a better community reader.
So, between 23 August and 6 September 2026, I published a three-part series on The Italian Reading Room called When voices go out of fashion.
Voices do not simply express who we are. They are shaped by culture, technology, power and fashion. Certain voices are praised, trained and imitated, while others are dismissed as old, unpleasant, weak or inappropriate. But who decides how a voice should sound, and what happens when an entire way of listening goes out of fashion?
The series moves between history and contemporary listening, beginning with the extraordinary yet disturbing history of the castrati, and following the changing ideals that have shaped the human voice. The final part brings the question back to our personal story and our living body, the source of it all.
